Your Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was put into effect in 1948 after World War II by the United Nations General Assembly. It was meant to prevent the atrocities committed in the Holocaust from ever reoccuring. By signing the document members of the United Nations were agreeing "to  secure the Declaration's universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of member states themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction."

Simplified version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
  1. Every human being is born equal and free
  2. Every human being has the right to the same rights (No discrimination) 
  3. Every human being has the right to life
  4. No human being will be held in slavery
  5. No human being will be subjected to torture
  6. Every human being will have the same rights no matter where they are or where they go
  7. Every human being is equal before the law
  8. Human rights will be protected by the law
  9. No human being shall be detained unfairly 
  10. All human beings have the right to a trial
  11. All human beings are innocent until proven guilty
  12. All human beings have the right to privacy 
  13. Every human being has the right to move to and from another country or place of residence.
  14. All human beings have the right to seek asylum
  15. Every human being has the right to a nationality
  16. All human beings have the right to marry and have a family when they reach adulthood. No one can be forced to marry and both spouses have the same rights
  17. All human beings have the right to own property
  18. All human beings have the right to freedom of thought
  19. All human beings have the right to freedom of expression
  20. Every human being has the right to freedom of assembly and association
  21. All human beings have the right to democracy 
  22. All human beings have the right to social security 
  23. Every human being has worker's rights
  24. Every human being has the right to leisure time
  25. Every human being has the right to food and shelter
  26. All human beings have the right to an education
  27. Every human being owns their own work (copyright)
  28. All human beings are entitled to live in a society where these rights are protected
  29. Every human being has a reponsibility to protect each other's rights
  30. No human being can take away another person's rights
